Uplifting Our Mission
Historic preservation and education programs serve as pillars of Hennepin Arts' mission. Your support ensures these efforts will continue to preserve historic theaters and nurture creative leadership for generations to come.
Historic Preservation
Your support allows us to:
Preserve and maintain the architectural beauty and cultural significance of Hennepin Arts’ three historic theaters — the Orpheum (1921), State (1921), and Pantages (1916) — ensuring they inspire future generations. Once part of Minneapolis’ famed “Theatre Row,” these iconic venues narrowly escaped demolition in the 20th century. Today, they stand as vibrant symbols of artistic excellence, continuing to inspire and captivate future generations.
Host nearly 600,000 visitors annually, creating vibrant, inclusive spaces where the community gathers to share transformative arts experiences and cultural connections.
Undertake multimillion-dollar restoration projects to maintain and modernize Hennepin Arts' three historic theaters — the Orpheum, State and Pantages that have been painstakingly restored to their original splendor. Recent efforts include lobby upgrades, modernized amenities and new HVAC systems that meet post-COVID safety standards.
Hennepin Arts proudly supports InspireMSP’s Career Day 2025, helping connect nearly 1,600 Twin Cities students with hands-on pathways into creative careers.
Reimagine the historic Dudley Riggs Theatre as the permanent home of the Brave New Workshop, preserving its storied legacy while supporting groundbreaking artistic innovation.
Protect the theaters' rich histories through meticulous conservation efforts, immersive storytelling and educational outreach that bridge their illustrious past with contemporary relevance.
Education Programs
Hennepin Arts' flagship education program, Spotlight Education, reaches 1 in 4 Minnesota high schools, providing vital theater education to nearly 8,000 students annually.
Through the Production Assessment program, Spotlight sends trained theater professionals and educators to watch and assess participating schools’ theater productions. Schools receive educational feedback and honors based on the merit of their show.
Provide community engagement and arts enrichment programs like Critical Review that teach high school students arts journalism, encourage critical thinking through reviewing Broadway productions and offer workshops with industry professionals.
Partner with Disney Theatrical Group to program Disney Musicals in Schools, an initiative that creates sustainable arts programming in public elementary schools, promoting early engagement in the performing arts.
Celebrate high school theater achievements through Spotlight Showcase where over 1,600 students perform at the historic State Theatre, promoting equity in arts access and building a strong theater community.
Cultivate equitable access to arts education by delivering innovative programs that inspire confidence, collaboration and artistic expression.
