When the public sees the historic Pantages Theatre in downtown Minneapolis, it is usually at dusk. The marquee lights gleaming onto the sidewalk, crowds gathering in the lobby, and patrons buzzing with excitement as they wait for the theatre doors to officially open.
On May 10, visitors experienced the theatre in a different light during Doors Open Minneapolis. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests explored the historic venue up close, admiring the intricate architectural details, taking in the view from the balcony, and seeing the original fire curtain, now more than 100 years old. Opened in 1916, the Pantages was designed by Minneapolis architects Kees and Colburn in an Art Moderne and Beaux Arts style.
Adding to the beautiful spring day, the Downtown Sketchers of Minneapolis invited guests to sketch the theatre from inside and outside the building before hosting a throw-down to showcase their work. The gathering drew artists and visitors alike, all appreciating the many perspectives and artistry inspired by the space.
Hennepin Arts’ participation in Doors Open Minneapolis reflects its ongoing commitment to the theatre district and to welcoming both new and longtime patrons. We loved that members of the public got to step into history and into the “sapphire jewel” that adds value on Hennepin Avenue.
