Dance on Hennepin Center Stage

Now through October 25

Welcome to the Best Buy Foundation Gallery, continuing our exhibit Dance on Hennepin, celebrating Minneapolis’ rich dance history. This exhibit features the extraordinary feat of moving the old Shubert Theater in 1999, which at the time held the Guinness World Record for the largest building ever moved on rubber wheels. Once relocated, the theater was remodeled by ARTSPACE and reopened as The Cowles Center, connecting it to the Hennepin Center for the Arts. The Cowles Center ceased operations in March 2024, and the City of Minneapolis is now reimagining the building’s future.

We shine a spotlight on MIXTAPE Collective, a local nonprofit serving the Twin Cities Hip Hop dance community. Through artist resources and annual performances, MIXTAPE engages with issues of racial and gender inequity, environmentalism and the joy of community building.

Represented on the large wall graphic is our Spotlight Education’s 2023 Spotlight Showcase, leading up to this summer’s 2024 Showcase at the State Theatre, where we look forward to celebrating Minnesota’s enormous statewide high school talent.

Also enjoy the many musical theater posters from the Fred Krohn collection, highlighting dance in musical theater performed on our stages through the years.

We also take a moment to remember the prodigious talent and vibrant spirit of dancer, community leader, gardener and good neighbor Robert Skafte, who passed away in December 2023 leaving a profound and beautiful legacy in dance and civic engagement.
